Mountain Man Soap {Review and Giveaway}

“Mountain Men rarely bathe, but when they do, they use our Soap!”

Mountain Man Soap {Review and Giveaway}Ok, so I am not exactly promoting a life without bathing (especially if you tend to get out there and sweat a lot) but I just had to laugh at their slogan.  Mountain Man Soap contacted us this winter and asked us to review their soaps.  Since they happen to come in “manly” scents such as Dirt, Smoke and Wood, we thought we’d try them out.  I, for one, can’t resist the smell of campfire, so I was completely intrigued (I KNOW I am not the only one out there!)  Mtn Papa went along with it to humor his wife (and because it’s “manly” of course!)

The reality is that the soaps are much more than “wilderness scented” – they are actually handmade with natural spring water (which they claim is the “secret ingredient”).

“Each batch is carefully blended with the oils of Palm, Coconut, Hempseed and Olive. I add Sodium Hydroxide to the water to create lye which is the acidic element of the process that reacts with the oils (bases) in order to saponify (solidify). I mix in a combination of grapefruit seed extract and vegetable glycerine for their antiseptic properties, aloe vera gel for additional healing, essential or fragrance oils (sometimes a combination of both) to create the perfect scent representing the outdoors, and either add ground oatmeal or hempseed flour to create the ruggedness of each bar.”

Our take:

It’s great soap.  It lathers well, cleans well, smells good, and leaves skin feeling fresh and ready to tackle the day.  The bars are also generously sized and the added ingredients in them help with some gentle scuffing and “ruggedness”.  It lasts a good long time (especially if you are only taking a few showers a week!)  Yes, it’s also definitely more expensive than what you can buy at a box store, but you really are getting all natural ingredients and supporting a smaller company.  Depending on the size of the bar (there are “Grizzly” and “Travel” size options), you pay about $26 for 4 bars.
