One of the joys of warmer weather is being able to eat outdoors. We do it as often as possible for various reasons:
- Less mess inside (this one gets at least ten gold stars for the very sake of making life easier for me!)
- More fresh air outside
- A chance to do something different
- Easy-access to getting back to playing
We also tend to spend a lot of time on the road, especially in the summer. Our goal is usually to get outside for the morning, end with an early picnic (before the lunching crowds in Yellowstone descend upon the picnic areas) and then head home to rest during the warmest part of the day.
Lately, we have been moving towards more of a bento-style lunch and having been loving our PlanetBox system. Made of stainless steel (so easy clean up AND no absorbing of yucky odors or stains), the box encourages using fresh foods with sensible portions. I avoid prepackaged foods as much as possible (which is certainly not easy), and this helps keep foods separate and let us buy in bulk. You’ll notice our cheese is packaged below, however. Because we aren’t perfect and sometimes those sort of things are just easier to grab quickly when we have them anyway. We know you understand.
We use the Rover model, which is perfect for our younger kids. It helps us pack a variety of healthy foods and helps THEM feel as though they have great choices as they eat. PlanetBox also makes a smaller option (Shuttle) and a larger option (Launch) to suit a variety of needs.
You can purchase magnets to individualize your boxes from a variety of designs or even make your own. While I find them a but cumbersome because they must be removed to wash, my kids love them and they help keep straight whose is whose.
Along with the Rover box, we also have a couple of the dippers, which are great for holding hummus, ranch, yogurt, etc. They even fit in the box (not too tall) so its all contained. The dippers have food grade silicone rubber seal to keep leaking from happening. While I always remove the seal for cleaning (and keep that part out of the dishwasher), they continue to keep food sealed in. No spills yet!
Finally, we keep the box and the dippers all in a PlanetBox bag, which is made specifically to hold the lunch kits. It just makes it easy.
