The Patagonia R1 Pullover fleece has been a top gear-pick of mine for the past 10 years.  I had one from college that I have very nearly worn out.  Small holes are forming on the sleeves and it is just a bit thinner than it used to be.  It has been worn, used and loved.

I was SO excited when Patagonia finally came out with a R1 HOODY zip up for women.  It is even more wonderful than it’s “retro” (though still completely available to buy!) cousin.

Ideal Uses:

- Climbing

- Skiing (XC and Alpine)

- Hiking

- Biking

- Um….any time you just need a GOOD mid-layer!

What changed:

- Longer Sleeves with thumb holes (for easier layering)

- Balaclava-like Hood

- Extended Hem

What I love about the R1 Hoody (let me count the ways….):

- Minimal bulk for layering

- Stretchy to allow for optimal movement

- Hi-Low Interior Grid is cozy and works great for staying dry (and safe) when working up a sweat in the cold

- The hood adds just a bit more protection around the neck and fits easily under a helmet/additional hat, etc.  The zipper is offset to allow less “zipper bulk” when layering (it’s not just twisted on my head in the picture! :) )

- The length (enough to tuck in pants or just adequately prevent any “peeking skin”)

- Zippered chest pocket is great for keeping the little things (I often even stash my camera in there.)

What I am not so crazy about:

- The zipper for the hood comes up to my nose.  Great for when I am trying to keep out really rough weather, but not something I will zip all the way most of the time.  Also, because the zipper is offset (see explanation above) it sticks just a little (though is working itself out with use.)

Buy It:

You can find the Patagonia R1 Hoody (for Men and Women) over at Patagonia.com, and the R1 pullover or R1 Zip Down (women’s currently on mega sale) over at REI.com (Psssttt….if you are a member at REI, their sale for 20% off a full-price item starts today!) and other great online and retail shops.

Patagonia generously provided me a R1 Hoody for review purposes. However, as always, the opinions expressed here are completely and honestly my own. Additionally, some of these links are affiliates. By clicking through them and purchasing from Patagonia.com you help offset the cost of this blog (and all the work that goes into it!) in a VERY small way. Thanks!

The Bottom Line

The Patagonia R1 Hoody is my top pick for a mid layer.  I wear it nearly daily (especially in the winter months.)  It's versatile, layer-able and super cozy and functional.
