Get ready for summer (or spring, fall or winter…) with this fabulous new book by Ken Keffer and Stacy Tornio just hitting shelves. A quick and easy read, The Kids’ Outdoor Adventure Book: 448 Great Things to Do in Nature Before You Grow Up is chock-full of great ideas in a check-list-like form (which totally suckers me in!)
The book is divided into the different seasons for easy planning and includes both simple adventures (example: Look up and watch the clouds) and more advanced adventures (example: Ride a horse.) In fact, each little blurb explaining the activity is rated on an adventure scale (1 means easy peasy, 5 is more involved.) It also includes projects, games, destinations and foods/recipes for each season.
While not all activities are suited for all ages, you CAN find something for everyone in it. We love reading through it, finding something new and then checking off when we have done it. What a great idea for heading into a time when kids are out of school and need just a little more entertainment (or time to just PLAY!)
The book was inspired by a 9-year-old kid and, like I mentioned, is filled with seasonal “checklists” of things kids should do in nature before they grow up. In spring, #31 on the list is “Learn How to Skip Rocks,” so Ken (one of the co-authors) put together a simple video tutorial on tips and tricks for skipping.
