12 Days of Gear Giveaways Day 12: Rainy/Snowy Day Fun

In case you just found us, make sure you check out all of our giveaways as we celebrate 12 Days of Gear Giveaways here on the blog.  They are only open for 72 hours so you don’t want to miss any!

Today’s group of giveaways is just because there are days that you just can’t get outside (or at least for very long!)  These are some of our favorite nature/outdoor-inspired games and activities and are ones we highly recommend.

    Green Kid Crafts

GKC_logo-300x240Our boys have been receiving Green Kid Crafts subscription boxes for over a year now.  They are most looked-forward to mail coming to our home and have produced some great creative AND play time.  You can read our previous full review here, but just a some of the reasons they remain our favorite:

    • Besides a pair of scissors or a knife, the boxes contain everything you need to complete all the projects.  This means they are great for bringing traveling and are always ready when you are.  We often take them camping.  It also means we’ve collected quite an impressive supply of quality paints, crayons, and pastels (among other supplies) over the past year.  That alone pays for the box!
    • Each box has a different theme which enhances learning
    • Not only are you doing craft projects, but they also always include some movement and creative play (so you aren’t just sitting around for those kids who aren’t good at that anyway!)

    Education Outdoors Games

We just discovered this company this year and have now been seeing their games all over the place (particularly in Yellowstone gift shops).

Their mission is simple: Reconnecting Families One Game at a Time.

And they do so through games that are helping families learn about the outdoors and be inspired to live an active and outdoor life.  They also are designed so they grow with you and can be modified and adapted easily for younger or older players (or those that know more or less about the subject.)

We were given the chance to check out their new game in collaboration with Schwinn, “The Biking Board Game“.  The game is for ages 4+ and educates players on the ins and outs of biking while promoting and inspiring an active, biking, lifestyle.

The kids loved the game pieces (which are all different Schwinn bikes, of course) and the chance to race to the end (and beat everyone else.)  We played on the “easy” level (you can move up levels as you become more knowledgable.)  J is a fairly avid biker and good at answering questions, but some of the ones on the easy level threw him.  It was a good challenge for him, but would definitely say that 4 is the base age level.

It’s a game we recommend, especially if you love biking (or want to get your family excited about biking.)

Education Outdoors also has a great set of other games we have on our wish list:  Camp, Fishing Camp, S’mores and Snipe are just a few of them.

Jeff Corwin’s Explorer Series Pocket Naturalist Guides

1583558188For kids (and adults) who love quick facts, great photos and some fun trivia, these Pocket Naturalist guides are great!  Available topics include: The World of SHARKS, PRIMATES, WILD CATS, WILD DOGS, SNAKES and BEARS.  While we obviously are lacking some of those animals in our immediate area, they are some of the most fascinating animals out there and good exposure for kids.  AND they are supplemented with the help of Jeff Corwin, an icon in the animal world!

The guides are all laminated, really sturdy (which is a good thing with kids) and packed full of good information.  They show different species, worldwide locations, and what to do when you are, for example, bitten by a snake.  We also loved how the information is basic and easy enough for even an older toddler or preschooler to understand.

The guides are available now at Amazon for preorder, and should be available for purchase in March.  They will be followed by some supplemental activity books in January 2014.  If you would like some copies now, you can contact Waterford Press directly by email orders@waterfordpress.com or call tel:800-434-2555 (they will ship direct!)
