As I’ve mentioned before, chalk is a staple at our home and makes frequent appearances in this suburban family’s outdoor play. It’s a great tool that I could go on and on about. In short, when we need an extra push out the door we bring out the chalk. Additionally:
- It promotes having fun, being creative, physical activity, as well as language and cognitive development.
- Writing/drawing with chalk encourages both fine and gross motor skill development
- Handling chalk is a good sensory experience and an opportunity for the kids to practice the skill of crossing the midline (an interesting bit about “crossing the midline” since it is a new phrase for me too).
When I came across these fun handmade chalks by Yesterday’s Echo Events , I was eager to try them out with the kids!
The kids were thrilled to open up our box of chalk. We did most of the same activities we usually enjoy with chalk: draw pictures, write names, practice numbers, create mazes, etc. As with most new ‘toys’ there was an added level of excitement, and I also observed them engage a bit differently with this chalk. As many toddlers or preschool-aged children will do with their other toys, they began to organize objects into rows, separate items by color, and/or sort & line them up.
Sounds pretty basic, I know. The versatility of this one simple tool, however, is just so wonderful! Don’t we all love a toy that our kids connect with and one that teaches them something meaningful? I’d argue that chalk is one of those classic toys- it both teaches, and delights!
Yesterday’s Echo Events chalk offers exactly that- an opportunity for fun and learning. And to those of you who need a rainy/snowy/extra-cold day activity indoors – chalk is your friend too. Our little chalkboard gets a lot of action on those rainy days!
I love these chalks! I wish I had discovered this little gem in time for my little guy’s birthday party favors for today. With that said, I’ll mention that using an unfamiliar shape was an adjustment for the kids. That adjustment, however, was a good finger dexterity exercise.
These chalks are very reasonably priced and will make a great stocking stuffer-but you’ll have to act fast!! Today is the last day to order “ready to ship” items in time for Christmas, and make sure to order before 3:00pm MST so they’ll go out with today’s shippment.
