A few years ago at the Outdoor Retailer show, I stumbled upon a booth where they were setting up and taking down tents and a super fast rate, thanks to the special mechanisms on the tents. I was intrigued and finally got my hands on some samples this season from LightSpeed Outdoors. While I will be sharing some more about the actual tents (and my favorite air mattress. ever.) in the coming weeks, I wanted to start with what has now become my go-to river beach set-up.
The Sport Shelter is my favorite shade shelter because it sets up SUPER easily, has room for a lot of people (depending on how small they are) and gives us just enough shade and protection in otherwise open areas. I’ve used it at the river, at the beach, and in our backyard. We’ve had picnics in it, put tables up inside and set out a potluck, and just escaped from the heat in it. Every time we do use it, we get tons of comments on how great it is. A top summer gear pick for us (and currently on sale at Amazon)!
What I love:
- Super quick and easy set up and take down. Putting the stakes in takes longer than anything else.
- Large enough to truly handle a small sports team, a few adults or our whole family.
- The ability to quickly and easily add and take down “walls” means you can customize your shade and air flow
- A sturdy bottom that can handle lots of abuse!
What I would like to see improved:
- While it folds down almost like an umbrella, it’s still long, which is a bit tough for storage.
- Staking really is required for keeping it in place in any sort of wind (but that is something I just figured)
LightSpeed Outdoors also makes these great lounger chairs (pictured above also). They fold up small, set up instantly and provide a good ground covering to sit on. And they come in a two-pack so are really very affordable. Sometimes we also lay them flat on the beach just as a little more protection than a towel would give. I love how they store flat too – just simple and effective!
Finally, their outdoor blanket is one of my all-time favorites. It’s fully waterproof, folds up into it’s own carrying case and is durable enough to handle rocky river beaches. It provides the perfect place to sit when there otherwise wouldn’t be one. The only gripe is that sometimes the carrying handle comes unsnapped as we carry it. Not a huge deal, but would love it to be just a little stronger.
