O.F.F.: Sunrise Girl Shirts

O.F.F.: Sunrise Girl Shirts + Giveaway

O.F.F. = Outdoor Fashion Friday.
Our (almost) weekly segment featuring our favorite styles for the season. Everything we share are pieces we love and love to share. As a family, we appreciate clothing that is worth our hard-earned money. It’s what we wear and trust!

O.F.F.: Sunrise Girl Shirts

Meet Sunrise Girl. A new company just for celebrating (all) girls and their families.

“Sunrise Girl was created to celebrate the passion, interests and abilities of real girls. We believe that it’s important to represent a wide variety of ways to “be a girl” to counteract the limited, gender-biased messages that are so frequently aimed at girls via clothing, toys, and the media.”

While my own daughter is too young to boast their unique designs, I jumped at the opportunity when contacted by the owner, Gina, to get some local girls in shirts. I loved the fact that the designs are based on the stories of real girls. They celebrate their different personalities and loves and talents.

The response from local parents was overwhelmingly positive, both in the quality of the shirts (thick, interlock knit fabric) and the message they send.  I can’t wait until L is old enough to wear them too.

This shirt is such a comfortable, soft, high quality material. It washes and wears well. I also love the message it sends about ‘No Child Left Indoors’! Girls are strong, independent and adventurous! Thank you!!”

“The shirt is now one of my daughter’s favorite as she has plenty of pink.  The blue color and adorable picture of a little girl in a tent really resonated with her as she spends weekends over the summer in a similar scene.  The shirt is super soft and seems very well made.”

“The shirt is made of quality, soft material and is long enough in the torso to cover growing girls!”

Sunrise girl is coming out with some new designs this spring and also offering some of their favorites in a short-sleeve style. These images below show you the real girls they are inspired by. I love that about this company. The images are linked to the stories of each girl (except for the “bug one” because that is brand new!). Make sure to click over and read them.

  1. So adorable. I love that they’re not pink and that they promote active imagination and exploring for girls! All boys in my house, but I have an adorable 5-yr-old niece with diabetes and her little sister who use their chances to be outdoors to forget about some of the other struggles they have in their lives.

  2. My little girl Flynn is only 2 right now. I can only hope that she is as passionate about the outdoors as the little girls that inspired these shirts. Right now she loves being outside and is not afraid to get dirty. She is independent and full of energy. I’m proud to be her mom and while I want her to stay little forever, I also can’t wait to see her personality grow and see the girl that she will be.

  3. What a cool company! I absolutely love the idea behind these shirts. I’d love to see my oldest daughter on one of them. She LOVES the outdoors, and is always up for a new adventure. C loves hiking, biking, skiing (or at least trying to ski), and “bouldering” with Daddy. She’s fascinated by bugs and plants, and whenever we drive somewhere she points out the mountains where she wants to hike or ski. I’d love to see a girl skiing, on top of a mountain, or riding a bike on one of these shirts! Plus, it would be fun to see a red-head like my daughter on one of these tees. 🙂

    1. Hi Keara,

Thanks for your comment and for your ideas. I’m right there with you on the skiing, hiking and bike riding shirt ideas. I hope to get at least one of those themes on a shirt for fall/winter. My daughter likes bouldering too. At least at our local indoor place and I’d love to feature a rock-climbing girl on a shirt, I’m just not sure how to translate the idea yet. And yay for red heads! If you’d like to email me offline and give me your contact information, I’d be happy to keep your daughter in mind for future designs. I’m just looking for real girls with real passions who would like to inspire others. 🙂

      Best,
      Gina

  4. My oldestfour are girls. They spend their days outdoors as much as possible. They love to explore hike make nature collections of leaves rocks sticks and flowers and look for animals in the woods. They absolutely love to swim and we spend our summers hopping from one lake or pond or stream to the next. We try to take several beach trips as they love the sand and the water and as many camping trips a as we can fit in usually one big one to a national Park. They’re interested in all kinds of different sports soccer basketball gymnastics Ice skating and bike riding. People say boys are dirty but I swear my girls just love to be muddy and dirt covered!

    1. Hi Patty,

I saw the pictures your posted of three of your girls enjoying being outside. They looked like they were having so much fun! They looked proud of crossing the water on the log or flipping upside-down and seriously concentrating trying to sneak up on those fish! Thanks for sharing! This is what I believe “being girly” is about and I love to see girls explore and enjoy themselves in these ways. I’ve had enough parents tell me their girls enjoy being muddy (and mine feel the same) that I think that needs to be the theme of a future shirt. Thanks so much for taking the time to write and share. I appreciate it!

  5. I am a mom to two girls, aged 3 and 1. They would wear them proudly. We love hiking and camping with them. Just last night we were planning a hike in the Shenandoah National Park for Saturday and my oldest declared that she would like to hike the tallest mountain. We live in a 900 sq foot apartment in a city and the girls crave all the time they get outside. They are balance bikers, rock throwers, diggers, gum ball collectors, kite fliers, runners, and full of life.

    1. Hi Teresa,

Thanks for sharing that. That spirit your daughter has, to declare that she’d like to hike the tallest mountain, is fabulous! I wish one could bottle it, save it and share it! That’s what I’m trying to capture with my shirts. 🙂 Cheers to your girls and their great and varied interests and love of the outdoors.

      Best,
      Gina

  6. These are great. My daughter is no longer the right age demographic, but I will happily recommend the brand. I especially love Lena’s super girl design!

  7. Id love to share these with my nieces. We dont get to see them very often, but I think they would love it!

  8. My daughter would love this and I think she’d actually wear it too! She especially loves the treehouse shirt

  9. I’d love these shirts for my girls! A building shirt would be neat too. I love to build, but it’s primarily considered a man thing. Thanks!

  10. My daughter Aliyah (10) has a love for music, especially the cello. She loves to take it to the park and play for the little kids and it’s not unusual to see her 1yr old brother seeing at her feet with a look of pure admiration as she plays. Her love for it is contagious! Her second passion is writing. She spends countless nights sitting on the balcony watching the sun go down as she writes a story or comic

  11. I love the inspiration for these shirts! I love that they’re neutral tones and that they aim to counteract the typical stereotypes of young girls.

My daughter just turned 2. We go hiking 2-3 times a week. She loves playing in the mud. She loves slugs. She loves looking for crabs on the beach. Yes, she loves playing with dolls and enjoys the color pink, but she also loves the color blue and loves playing in the dirt and looking for bugs. She loves trucks and camping.

She would proudly wear these shirts! We sometimes shop in the “boy” section just so we can get some clothes with trucks and bugs on them. 😉

  12. Love the idea of encouraging girls to love and be outdoors, in nature. Very cute, too.

Society and marketing still tends to send a message to girls and women that being out where you may get a little dirt or dust on you is not a good thing.

The way clothing is made these days, love that they are making quality clothing and not something that is see through and thinner than tp.

  13. I have three girls, nearly 5, nearly 3, and 3.5 months. We’ve been tent camping in the Rockies every suumer since “Thing 1” was a year old. She loves shooting her bow and arrow, kayaking, ballet, and Star Wars, especially Darth Vader. “Thing 2” loves dress up and mud. Sometimes at the same time. She thinks she is a racoon a great deal of the time. The jury is still out on laid back “Thing 3”, but so far, we know she’s happy in her carrier, close to Mama and Dad. 🙂

  14. Those shirts are darling. These would be for my niece. She is an avid outdoors girl and would fit in perfectly with her style of dressing.

  15. Love how real and outdoorsy they are! I especially like the tent one. I camped a lot as a kid and teen, and we’re trying to do it at least once or twice a year with our little girls.

  16. I have two outdoorsy girls…my 7yo loves dirt, mud and water together is best! She loves “cooking” and creating using all sorts of outdoor ingredients like pebbles, leaves, berries, etc. My 3yo loves flowers (Rosa Lily ;). She can be seen lying in the grass adoring them. Maybe I can get a size for each of them?

  17. I love my 3 nieces. They are all different but sweet in their own way. I would like to see some bohemian design on the shirt.

  18. Christopher Sorel

my daughter can go fishing with me or put on a dress for a dance. I have a great 11 year girl that is loving of animals and the outdoors as well as life

  19. My 5 year old daughter loves pink, and she loves dresses, skirts and tutus. She’s wicked fast on single track with her new bike. Loves to cuddle her brother in the chariot while I take them on adventure runs. Is surprisingly accurate with her bow and arrow. Makes the most delectable mud pies. Climbs like a sticky footed gecko…climbing walls, trees, slickrock, anything she can get her hands on. She has a trademark song she belts out whenever she’s so inspired – the top of Gorham Mtn in Acadia National Park, the first time seeing the Atlantic Ocean, Skiing down a blue run for the first time, crossing the monkey bars without falling. And all this time she is absolutely guaranteed to be wearing a tutu or a dress and at least one clothing item HAS to be pink pink pink. I just finished sewing a pink dress for her, complete with a firetruck on the front. I’m sure she’ll be wearing while she rocks some big hike this summer. : ) Love this girl.

    1. Valerie, That is such a beautiful and moving tribute to your daughter! I loved reading every word. What beautiful and vivid imagery of an active, spirited and strong girl. I’m totally captivated by her just reading this. And particularly love the trademark song when inspired. How wonderful that she just lets her soul sing!

      Gina

  20. My girl is still tiny, but I look forward to getting her (and big brother) on bikes so we can go riding as a family. My dad died when I was young but going for one-on-one rides is one of my fondest memories.

  21. jodi Armstrong

My little two year loves being outside and getting dirty. She loves camping and rock climbing. She recently went to the top 80ft of her first outdoor climb and loved looking down and waving at daddy below.

  22. my daughter is passionate about singing and music, she is like a disney princess because she sings her life as she goes.

  23. I love these shirts! Girl power! I would love to win the shirt for my cousin MH, she absolutely loves everything outdoors. From an early age she has loved everything outdoors therefore is so much fun to go out with because she knows every wild flower name under the sun. Secondly, might sweet daughter, who is 9 months, who we are hoping to instill the love of the outdoors too. SO far we have had success! When I was little I loved everything outdoors, in a dress and all I was out playing in the mud! I hope that to be her someday 🙂

  24. I have 3 outdoorsy daughters who love to be outside. We usually find them in the creek or digging in the soil. I love to see them exploring.

  25. My little girl is 1 1/2 and she loves going to the playground, and going on the swings and slides and saying weeee! She also adores anything that moves such as cars, bikes and trucks. She thinks her dad is every man she sees in a book or on tv that is doing something exciting, interesting or cool!

  26. These shirts are so cute! My daughter is incredibly spunky, fiercely independent, always happy, and incredibly caring. She’s the best thing that has ever come into my life and I would love to win these for her. 🙂

  27. My daughter, Hannah is a tom-boy who loves to dress like a girly-girl. She is fearless, fun, smart and just plain awesome!

  28. Peggy Rydzewski

Right now I am getting to know my 3 year old grand d daughter.. She is so happy and vocal and she makes me laugh.. She is wonderful.

  29. Oh, forgot to write that I would love to win this for my bestie’s little girl. He mom is a mountaineer and she is the only girl in our pack of boys as of yet!

  30. My daughter Willow loves the outdoors! We love camping and that’s what we spending most of our summer doing! She is a little tomboy that loves baiting her own fish hook and catching bugs. She is only done playing outside when she is so dirty, she needs a bath. She wants to play football when she is old enough and wants to be the one tackling. Funny though, she always wants to wear frilly dresses, but we can’t tell her she is pretty, cute or adorable or else she will change. She is a nut!

  31. These shirts would be excellent for my one of a kind daughter M. She is a spitfire that can hold her own with her older brothers. Her want to try everything attitude inspires me and scares me at the same time. I am challenged daily by her spirit but love her love of life.

  32. my little sassy pants is Lily! she is 3 and full of energy and loves to be outdoors! she likes getting dirty and then getting all pretty after! shes so much fun and my little tomboy and diva all in one! i would love to see a shirt with slinky’s on it! she kinda loves those darn silver springs!

  33. Our grand daughter loves to help her Daddy in their garden and play ball outdoors. If I won, the shirts would be for her. I’d love to see a shirt picturing a girl outdoors with a day pack, a sandwich, and a book. She could climb a tree and read up there in the branches.

  34. My granddaughter is 6 going on 20 I would love to win this for her. She has 2 younger brothers and 1 sister so she is like the mother of the 3 younger ones.

  35. The girls in my life just increased by 2, because my grandson has become engaged to a young woman with 2 small girls. They like to play with their new (girl) cousin, but are having a little more trouble with the 6 year old brother, who feels that his turf has been invaded!

  36. My girls are passionate about reading, writing and drawing. They also enjoy running around outdoors, playing in the sand and just being themselves.

  37. The little girl in my life has shown she is a fighter from day one! She was in the NICU as a newborn, and fought her way out! She has continued to show her determination daily- her brothers adore her! She seems to be able to charm her way into and out of everything! She loves nature. She would like to see some birds on the shirts!
