Don’t worry, Dads. We haven’t forgotten you this season too. I wanted to do a quick round-up of some of Mtn Papa’s favorite things. Perfect gifts for the outdoor dad. Plus, we get to give away some of our favorites, and that’s always a happy thing!
Fugoo Speaker ($199.99 – core + jacket)
I’ve raised my white flag on this one – Mtn Papa has taken it over completely. But, we’re secretly happy when he forgets it at home. It’s really the perfect gift for anyone because it has incredible sound, connects via bluetooth (so no wires), holds a charge for a super long time (40+ hours, but we think much longer), and is almost indestructible.
The snowproof, sand proof and waterproof bluetooth speaker core comes with a variety of different jackets (“style”, “sport” or “tough”), depending on your needs. We have the sport jacket and have had zero trouble with it not being “tough enough”.
Mtn Papa uses it in his office, in the truck while he is working and walking around so he can listen to podcasts, etc. without having headphones in. When he shares, we love it for camping, outdoor play and impromptu dance parties.
The Fugoo also has the capability to be used with Siri and Google Now so you can talk to IT and don’t have to stop what you are doing to touch the buttons. Genius.
The Fugoo also has a variety of mount or attachment options – bike, strap and multi. We have the bike mount and usually attach it to the bike trailer so the kids keep entertained on long rides.
The only downside? When you turn it off, it says “powering off” way too loud (despite what the volume of the speaker is at that time). I always jump thinking it’s going to wake someone up.
All in all, this speaker is the only one I am ok with us having outdoors and don’t worry about it. Like I said, the sound is incredible and it works super slick – we honestly need to go out and buy at least one more (so we don’t have to fight over the one we have…)
SunTurtle Solar Lamp ($24.99)
This is the brightest solar lamp I’ve seen. Because of that and the fact that it charges quickly AND holds a charge, it has become a permanent fixture in our camping pile-of-gear. After numerous tests for charge/discharge time and some early camping trips, I can safely say we think its worth the $24 price tag.
The SunTurtle is unique because of its shape – like a turtle, of course. It also has a 1 1/8″ hole that can fit over the top of a bottle as a way to hold it up. To be perfectly honest, we rarely have bottles around that size, especially while camping, but it works well clipped on a carabiner too.
It also comes with a flexible tri-pod that can be used to set it up on its own or attach it to a wall or ceiling. It works great sitting on a really flat surface (like a table), but isn’t ideal on more uneven terrain. The tripod will be left at home when we are short on space and weight capabilities. Speaking of weight, it comes in at 3.53 oz. Not the lightest thing in the world, but light enough to carry on your pack and not think too much about it (in most circumstances).
White River Knucklehead Knife ($65-80 depending on finish)
We haven’t had this one to test out for very long, but so far it’s a big winner which is why it made the list! Completely American-made, the knife is light (1.7 oz.), with an extremely sturdy blade to allow for effective heavy cutting long-term. The knife has finger holes in the grip for safety and a great grip in most cutting conditions. And they even made the rearmost hole double as a bottle opener.
While Mtn Papa is especially excited to use it hunting this season, he is carrying it now for camping and fishing and all those situations you just need a dependable knife.
Quick stats (directly from the manufacturer):
- Blade length: 2.875 inches
- Overall length: 6 inches
- Blade thickness: 0.145 inches
- Steel type: CPM S30V (available with optional PVD ionbond® finish at extra cost)
- Hardness: 60 (Rockwell C Scale)
- Sheath: Kydex multi-position, multi-use design
Mountain Khakis Equatorial Long Sleeve Shirt ($89.95)
Also available in a short sleeve version, this is Mtn Papa’s favorite shirt. It’s super light weight, has a UVA, UVB 45+ rating, is wrinkle-free, dries quickly and is the perfect summer shirt for travel or outdoor play. Plus it’s nearly impossible to get dirty and looks great for church or hiking.
