Fall weather brings relief from hot summer temps that makes everyone want to go outside! The colors, the cool air, the moody rainy days- we are here for it! And wouldn’t it be great if our kids grow up not thinking rainy weather was a mandate to stay inside?
Sure, cozying up by the fire and playing board games while it pours outside has it’s place, but there’s also such magic in being able to be outside in cold and wet weather but feel totally cozy inside your coat!

With a handful of rainy days finally hitting our valley, we took to the trail to test out how the Reima gear for rain would hold up. My boys, ages 7, 11 and 13 were happy to splash, climb and explore in the name of research.

Footwear
If we start from the bottom up, lets talk about socks and shoes. We only tested two different options for footwear, but there are SO MANY waterproof options to choose from, so make sure you check out the whole collection on Reima’s website. They offer high tops, low tops, barefoot style shoes, velcro closures, traditional tie shoes, etc. They truly have something for everyone and they are so durable and well made.
For moisture management, you’ll want wool socks to keep feet dry and comfortable. Wool has the handy property of insulating even when wet, so if splashing gets out of hand, and water gets in the boots, their feet will stay much warmer than if they only had cotton socks on! My kiddo found this out after getting too deep in a pond.
Parit Kids Merino Wool Socks
We got these in a two-pack which was convenient. They come in fun stripes, they’re a wool blend, and they’re thin and stretchy so they don’t feet too bulky in shoes and boots. They have several size options so you can get just the right fit, and at $24.95 for 2 pair it feels like a pretty decent deal. My kids are already fighting over them.
Kulkuri Low Waterproof Sneakers
My 7 year old tested these waterproof sneakers out and LOVED them. He loved the grippy soles and the rugged feel of them. He loved that he could walk through puddles and streams and not get his feet wet. He felt capable on rocks and logs and not sloppy like traditional rain boots. I can tell we will be using these for most of our hiking from now on. They feel really well made and durable, and they look pretty cute on as well.
I like that they have removable insoles for easy fit and easy drying, and they have cambered soles that make them smooth to hike in. They also have a protective toe cap and reflective details for those evenings running around the neighborhood when kids need to be seen. They really are waterproof up to the ankle, which we both thought was pretty cool.
Ankles Kids Rubber Rain Boots
You can’t test out rain gear without trying the traditional rain boots though, can you? We ordered the Ankles, because we wanted a low profile casual rain boot that our son could slip on and off easily and stay dry. Plus they’re just cute.
They kept him dry until just above the ankle, and went well with his rain pants. They didn’t feel too sloppy, although it should be noted that they fit a bit loose, as you’d expect. I think they’ll be a great staple for fishing in Alaska this summer. They have decent grip, flexible soles, and removable insoles for sizing and drying. They come in 7 colors which is nice.
Bottoms
My kids are getting a little old for full rainsuits (I know, a sad milestone!), but I wanted to see if Reima had good options for older kids. We are happy to report that they do in fact! With sizes up to 14, they still fit all my boys! Some of the size 14 items run a bit small or slim, but most work great.
We tested two different waterproof pants, both of which would be great for wet weather hiking or just all around rainy day play.
Sampu Waterproof Pants
For my older boys, we got the Sampu waterproof pants in teal. It’s a fun color (also available in black). I like that the fabric has some stretch, plus reinforced knees and seat. The pants are fully waterproof, but they feel soft, not plasticky like many traditional rain pants. My boys splashed and tried to soak them but stayed nice and dry.
They have taped seams, super durable but breathable fabric, and waist adjustments as well as cord adjustments in the leg. They’ve got pockets and mesh lining. My boys said they were comfortable for running and jumping and didn’t restrict movement.
I will say they are a slim fit, so thicker kids might not fit them as well. They have a button fly instead of a stretchy waist band, and my 13 year old didn’t love how tight they were (size 14). I will say he likes loose fitting pants though. They look great on, and I think will feel more comfortable with wear. They do have stretch in the fabric and my average sized 11 year old loved the fit of the size 12.
Vaelta Hybrid Pants
For our 7 year old, we tested the Vaelta hybrid pants. They are soft and stretchy, with an elastic waistband and leg ends. They have reinforced knees and seat, which feel very durable. They seem to be quite waterproof despite the soft fabric feel which is nice. They are listed as only water-repellent which means the seams are not taped, but my kid stayed dry in them all day.
Our kiddo reported these to be comfortable and they held up to water, bum scootching, and crawling across a rocky creek bed. They are thin and breathable, so they dry fast- great for spring and fall. They will be awesome for hiking and I think will hold up for school and playground use as well. I love a good double duty piece. They come in four different colors to fit lots of opinions.
Jackets
We tested a mix of waterproof and fleece jackets, because if you’re going to be playing in wet weather, fleece is a great thin insulator that manages moisture well. They go together!
Niksini Seawool Fleece Jacket
Our 13 year old LOVES this fleece. It’s really soft and slim fitting but stretchy. Full zip for ventilation and a fun print. It fits well under shells or other jackets, and will be great as a stand alone jacket in fall and a layering piece for skiing and snow play.
As an animal lover he likes that it’s made out of recycled oyster shells! It has a full length zipper with a chin guard and feels like a sweater, which gives it an extra cozy vibe. Hand pockets are a big plus, and it comes in 4 different colors. It’s also compatible with Reima’s zip in layering system. The size14 was comfortable with a bit of room to grow for our average sized 13.5 year old.
Reila Kids Brushed Fleece Sweatshirt
Another great layering piece to go under shells, this super soft sweatshirt is a wardrobe staple. It’s great on it’s own as a comfy/cozy warm top, but manages moisture and wicks away sweat thanks to the brushed fleece on the inside. With thumb holes and a crew neck, it will be great to layer for spring, fall, and winter.
There are also matching brushed fleece pants available (Nasta joggers) to make it a set, or a hoodie version (Reilu). Reila comes in 3 colors with a cute mountain graphic on the front.
Vaihto Kids Hybrid Jacket
This jacket is waterproof, and great for those ‘in-between’ fall days. It feels like a light puffy vest with thin fleece lined shell for the hood/arms. The size 14 fits a little snug on our 13 year old, so I’d say it runs a bit small.
It’s got a cozy chin guard and full zipper. The hood is detachable, and it has reflective features for low light play. It repels dirt and water really well, and it’s waterproof, windproof, and breathable. It feels really durable.
My son really liked it, once he got used to the snug fit, but definitely wishes it had hand pockets. It does however, have a chest pocket. It’s a sharp looking jacket that will hold up for hiking and school days.
Salmi Kids Waterproof Jacket
This jacket is BOMB. My kids loved it as soon as they put it on. It’s soft and flexible, but really breathable. Outfitted with mesh lining, it’s not sticky or plastic feeling at all. It’s waterproof, windproof, and really durable.
Are we sensing a theme here? All the gear we’ve tested feels tough and like it will last through several kids.
The Salmi feels lightweight and has stretchy panels that allow for easy movement and doesn’t feel sweaty after running around all afternoon. My kids put it to the test and and the taped seams kept them totally dry. We definitely recommend this for an everyday rain jacket.
Sevetti Waterproof Jumpsuit

This full-body jumpsuit is the ultimate defense against biting fall winds, mud, and chilly drizzle. My 8-year-old loves pulling on one piece and heading right out the door—especially with the internal waist cinch for a less baggy fit. Meanwhile, my toddler is obsessed with the durable silicone boot loops that keep the leg cuffs anchored securely over her boots so her ankles stay warm and dry. With light insulation and fully sealed waterproof seams, it keeps them comfortable whether sitting in wet leaves or charging through puddles.
