Think Outside Boxes
In my opinion, Think Outside is the most comprehensive outdoor subscription box for kids aged 4+ . Younger kids will benefit from parent help and older kids (aged 9+ ) can explore on their own.
We got a year-long subscription for our kids and it’s FANTASTIC.
Over the course of a year, kids receive all the gear and knowledge they need to safely explore and learn outside.
The products are high quality, the learning is comprehensive and well thought-out and you end up with a backpack of outdoor-inspired treasures.
Hands-down this is our top pick for ANY outdoor kid and, in my opinion, the best subscription box parents can buy. It’s a perfect gift.
Kiwi Crate
Kiwi Crate has a bunch of different boxes based on ages and different interests. This is the only subscription box we know of with options for 1-2 year olds all the way up to teens and adults.
How it works is you choose the age, then choose the interest. Options exist for the tinkerer, the explorer, the artist, the scientist and the innovator.
Kiwi Crate Subscription Boxes
- 0-24 months: The Panda Crate will engage young babies with toys they can crinkle, smell, and chew, while toddlers will receive sorting blocks and other early math games.
- 2-4 years: The Koala Crate is all about playing and doing! Our favorite from this crate is the “let’s pretend to go camping” activity.
- 5-8 years: School age children will love the Kiwi Crate, which will help them develop into creators, tinkerers and innovators using fun STEM activities.
- 6-11 years: The Atlas Crate contains fun, hands-on activities designed to teach your child about unfamiliar places and cultures.
- 9-16 years: The Doodle Crate gives older children tools to express their creativity by making things like felt gardens and handmade soaps. Also for this age group, the Tinker Crate contains activities to engage children who love engineering and science.
- 14-100 years: The Maker Crate is one that’s as fun for the grown-ups as it is for the kids. This crate will give you the tools and inspiration needed to design fun – and functional things. Ever wanted to engineer your own cantilever wooden desk lamp? If so, the Eureka Box is the one for you (ok, your kids will love it too).
Most of the projects are useful in every day life, too. Your child will love creating things like clay organizer trays and macrame hanging planters (which make great gifts!).

Each box contains high-quality materials to keep your child engaged. The video instructions are easy to understand and follow with minimal adult help.
“I like the Kiwi Crate for its variety of activities! Each crate comes with a little magazine and an activity that uses art, science, and engineering. They are great for rainy days and Kylie (4.5) loves when she gets the crate in the mail. The level of parental involvement varies with each crate.”

Little Passports
Little Passports was started by two moms who wanted to develop a fun way for children to learn about their world (and we love to support our fellow mamas!)
If you love to travel or learn about the world, Little Passports subscription boxes are a fantastic way to spark your child’s curiosity about other countries and cultures.
Little Passports offers five different boxes for children age 3-5, 5-8, 6-10, 7-12, and 9+.
Each month, your child will receive a kit that contains age appropriate activities. Preschool age kids will love the suitcase that arrives in the first box, which they can personalize with the included stickers and luggage tag.
Younger kids will love collecting souvenirs and trading cards from each place they “visit”. Older kids will become global citizens through activities like field guides and photo scavenger hunts.
Little Passports is one of the pricier subscription boxes we reviewed, but we think it would make a great gift (hint…hint…when grandparents ask for gift ideas).
Spangler Science
Spangler Science club is an excellent monthly subscription box if you’re looking for STEM gadgets, hands on activities and science projects. And best of all? Most of the the activities can be done outside.
If science experiments like Boo Bubbles, Instant Snow and Geyser Tubes that shoot 30 feet high piques your interest, this might just be the subscription box you need.
Designed for kids age 5-12, Spangler Science offers two different subscription choices. StemLab is about $20 per month and the five included activities require little to no adult assistance.
StemDelux costs $30 per month, but the box includes 10 activities designed for kids and adults to work collaboratively.
In these crazy COVID times, many parents (myself included) are wondering what Halloween will look like. Socially distant trick-or-treating? No fun Halloween parties?
Spangler Science comes to the rescue with an entire section of Spooky Science Experiments like glow in the dark slime, dry ice gas and exploring the science behind spooky sounds.
Green Kid Crafts
Green Kid Crafts has come a long way in the past few years and now has a variety of boxes perfect for outdoor kids by age. I love that many of them are focused on nature or outdoor-based learning (arctic science, gemstone mining, etc.)
These boxes are a great value for what you get and really help kids with hands-on learning. Perfect for homeschool or supplemental learning and fun!
Available for kids aged 2-4, 5-10 and 10+.
Bookroo
I am such a sucker for books in particular and think kids should have full access to them as much as possible. With many libraries being less accessible right now, I admit to purchasing more books than I have in the past, and love having shelves full of books for our whole family.
Bookroo is fantastic way to quickly boost your home library with books perfect for cuddling while you camp, after hiking or just for family bonding.
Their books are hand-picked to be the best of the best and are targeted specifically for kids aged 0-10.
The books come individually wrapped (2-3) per subscription box, which makes them super fun to open.
Outdoor Subscription Boxes are Fun!
Just receiving regular mail is sure to put a smile on your kids face, but imagine them receiving mail full of fun, engaging activities! Especially during this wacky COVID time, we love giving our kids something to look forward to.
These subscription boxes help them get outside, which we love even more.
Subscription boxes are the ultimate form of a gift that keeps on giving, whether they’re for your own family, or someone else’s.
