When I was in high school, I clearly remember walking into a Cabelas and seeing a Family/Double sleeping bag hanging on the wall. I immediately tagged it as crazy, dismissed it and swore I would never personally use one.
Fast forward some years and I was suddenly dealing with kids, camping, sleeping (maybe) and sleeping bags. As I spent many nights laying awake as I tried to fit myself and my wiggly baby in our sleeping bag, I realized that whole “family sleeping bag” maybe wasn’t such a bad idea.
The fact that we were given the chance to check out the Teton Sports Mammoth 20 degree double sleeping bag this winter meant our introduction to winter camping (with small children) so we could test it out. Sometimes you just need a little gear as an excuse to get out trying something new.
Our testing happened in the back yard, but in the snow and ice all the same. And the temperature definitely dipped below 20 degrees. The Mammoth performed beautifully.
Built with car (or backyard) camping in mind (there is no way you are going to lug this baby backpacking), Teton Sports obviously worked hard on the details.
Based off of their Celsius line, the Mammoth boasts the following

Enough room literally for the entire family if you don’t mind cozying up.
Easy Access
Three separate zippers so you can get out without disturbing anyone else and the bottom zipper allows the bag to be separated into two different quilts.
Those zippers also mean you can attach to more bags for an even greater sleeping space (the size possibilities are endless!)
Cozy and Warm
Cinch-able draft tubes to fit right at your neck and prevent drafts (even when your sleeping partners are moving…)
The cotton flannel interior feels like your bed at home.
What we love about the Mammoth Double Sleeping Bag
- Substantial and heavy for warmth
- Super soft and cozy cotton lining
- Easily fits an adult and 2 small children, or two adults and one kid (two adults and two kids is really pushing it…)
- Draft tubes truly do keep out drafts for staying warmer while camping
What we aren’t so crazy about
It is really REALLY heavy. Granted, it is also warm, but isn’t something you (meaning “I”) can carry around with a squirming kid in the other arm.
Getting it back in the stuff sack is a chore. Like a two-person-struggling MAMMOTH (pun intended) chore. I definitely see myself just throwing it in the car and dealing with the stuffing when we got back home.

The Bottom Line
Nothing like taking your cozy bed from home camping with you. The Mammoth does just that with a plush interior, great sleeping weight and the option to make it as big as your family needs. It is made for the camper that doesn’t want to sacrifice comfort in a tent and is very warm (even warm enough for winter camping).
We gave it 4 stars only because of how difficult it is to lug around and re-pack (though we know that is just part of the “game” here!)
