Reima Spring Gear Review: Waterproof Kids’ Clothing for Outdoor Adventures

Spring in our house is a muddy, messy adventure. We have kids who are always outside building forts, climbing trees, exploring trails, and just being kids, plus my three oldest attend an afterschool outdoor school program. We need gear that can keep up with their active lives and handle whatever spring throws our way. It’s essential that they stay dry, comfortable, and ready for anything.

Known for their durable and kid-friendly outdoor clothing, we were eager to test Reima’s spring line. We’ve been purchasing and loving Reima gear on our own for years, so we were excited to see how this specific selection held up in our daily outdoor adventures. I’m excited to share our experiences and give you a real-world look at how this Reima spring gear performed for our family.

Non-Waterproof Spring Jackets

Not every spring day demands full waterproof gear. For those chilly misty mornings or just a light sprinkle, water-resistant layers keep kids comfortable without overheating.

Samota – Fur Fleece Jacket

The jacket is primarily a comfortable fleece, with added water-resistant fabric on the hood and shoulders for light moisture protection. My 8-year-old gives the Reima Samota jacket high marks for its style and color, which she considers “kind of cool.” However, we noticed the zipper occasionally snagged on the inner fabric wind guard.

Available in sizes 4T, 5Y-14Y.

Turnkkinen – Sherpa Fleece Jacket

The Turkkinen Reima jacket is a super soft fleece choice for spring’s milder weather. My 3-year-old adores the cute squirrel pattern, and I find the cuffed sleeves incredibly helpful for keeping her hands uncovered. It’s a sweet and practical jacket for little ones.

Available in sizes 2T-4T, 5Y-10Y.

Uumaja – Water-Repellent Insulated Jacket

The Uumaja Reima jacket is a fully water-resistant and notably warmer option, ideal for chillier spring climates. My 6-year-old is more sensitive to cold and appreciated the extra warmth. However, we did find the fit a bit wide through the body, which, combined with his slimmer build, allowed some wind to sneak in. We’re hoping Reima considers adding an adjustable elastic bottom in future designs to provide a more customizable fit.

Available in sizes 4T, 5Y-14Y.

Waterproof Spring Jackets

Spring weather can be notoriously unpredictable, and a reliable, lightweight waterproof jacket is essential for keeping kids dry during sudden downpours. These jackets are designed to withstand heavy rain and are often quite packable, making them perfect for stashing in a backpack or stroller.

Vanetti – Softshell Jacket

The Vantti Reima jacket is a fantastic softshell option for spring showers, boasting a material feel remarkably similar to my husband’s park ranger jacket – durable and ready for anything. We’ve found it holds up beautifully to rough 3-year-old toddler play. While she loves the jacket’s overall comfort and color, she did express a bit of disappointment at the lack of hand pockets, as she’s a big fan of warming her hands and collecting treasures.

Available in sizes 12-24 months, 2T-4T, 5Y-10Y.

Tuulela – Lightweight ReimaTec Waterproof Jacket, Lined

The Tuulela Reima jacket has been a hit with our 4-year-old child, thanks to its two-tone color, comfortable elastic waist, and practical zipper pockets. I’ve been impressed by its breathability; he stays comfortable even during active play, without overheating. While the material feels lighter than some of our other waterproof jackets, worrying me slightly about long-term durability with our rough-and-tumble kiddo, it’s proven surprisingly durable so far.

Available in sizes 12-24 months, 2T-4T, 5Y-10Y.

Soutu – ReimaTec Everyday Waterproof Jacket, Lined

The Soutu Reima jacket offers a more grown-up feel, which our big middle child appreciates. It’s a solid, sturdy jacket with a fantastic adjustable waist, providing a comfortable and tailored fit. We’ve found it feels noticeably more robust than the Tuulela, giving us confidence in its durability for our active kid.

Available in sizes 2T-4T, 5Y-12Y.

Suojala – ReimaTec 2.5L Waterproof Jacket

The Suojala Reima jacket is the best bigger kid jacket, truly feeling like a high-end adult jacket. The thoughtful sleeve extensions were a surprisingly exciting detail that offered extra coverage and comfort. Its exceptional packability makes it an ideal choice for all kinds of adventures. The only minor drawback is the absence of hand pockets, which would have completed this otherwise perfect jacket.

Available in sizes 4T, 5Y-14Y.

Waterproof Pants and One-Pieces

Waterproof pants are a spring essential, especially for families with active kids. They provide crucial protection against wet weather, allowing children to play freely in puddles and damp conditions without getting soaked through. Plus, they’re fantastic for quickly throwing on over other clothes, creating an instant barrier against mud and dirt.

Sampu – Lightweight, Mesh Lined Waterproof Pants

The Sampu pants are the clear favorite for my oldest. She loves their durable, breathable fabric, the tactical thigh pocket, and just how cool they look. The adjustable waist, coupled with a button and zipper fly, gives them a grown-up feel while still staying up on her tiny waist. Plus, they roll up easily for her backpack, making them her go-to for quick protection during outdoor school or waiting for the bus.

Available in sizes 4T, 5Y-14Y.

Kuivala – ReimaTec Lightweight Shell Waterproof Pants

These pants, with their light, packable shell material and thigh pocket, are ideal for layering. While I value their portability, I miss the ease of Reima’s button adjusters; the drawstring waist requires adult help. They’re not our everyday go-to, but they’ll be perfect additions to our on the go kit for unexpected rain showers or impromptu river play.

Available in sizes 4T, 5Y-14Y.

Samppi – ReimaTec Waterproof Outdoor Pants

The Samppi pants have quickly become a favorite for our 4-year-old’s adventures. They’re incredibly durable, with reinforced knees and seat, handling all the rough play we throw at them. The easy button-style adjustable waist and handy thigh pocket are fantastic features, and the double-lined construction adds an extra layer of protection. These are definitely my new go-to waterproof pants for little ones.

Available in sizes 2T-4T, 5Y-10Y.

Nurmes – Softshell Outdoor Jumpsuit

We purchased our first Nurmes when our oldest started outdoor preschool at age three and can attest to its impressive durability—it handles slides, crawls, and climbs easily. The one-piece design makes it a breeze to throw on over regular clothes, which is a lifesaver with toddlers. While it might not withstand hours of heavy downpours like their other dedicated rain pants on the list, the sheer toughness makes it my top choice for toddlers.

Available in sizes 2T-4T, 5Y-8Y.

Waterproof Shoes

Waterproof shoes are essential for active kids year-round. They provide crucial protection against wet weather, allowing children to play freely in puddles and mud without getting soaked. I tested four styles, and they’re a must-have for spring showers and muddy adventures.

Hyppii – ReimaTec Waterproof Barefoot Shoes

The Hyppii Reima shoes have quickly become a favorite for our toddler’s adventures. They’re incredibly flexible, allowing for natural movement, and the wide velcro opening makes for easy on and off, perfect for little ones. The durable construction handles all the rough play we throw at them, making these my new go-to waterproof shoes for toddlers.

Available in sizes 6 Toddler -10.5 Toddler, 11 Kids-13.5 Kids.

Passo – ReimaTec Waterproof Walking Shoe

The Passo shoes were a bit of a surprise. The sole, while appearing chunky, proved more flexible than anticipated. We initially wanted them for our younger middle child, but they ran significantly large, fitting our older middle child perfectly. While my six-year-old loves them, the clunky sole makes them unsuitable for toddlers. They definitely run big, so size down!

Available in sizes 4.5 Toddler -10.5 Toddler, 11 Kids.

Hiipien – ReimaTec Waterproof Mid-Season Shoe

The Hiipien shoes proved a bit challenging with their stiff soles and narrow opening, making them difficult to put on and take off. However, my older son absolutely loves the aggressive tread, finding it incredibly secure for climbing and outdoor adventures. Be prepared to assist with putting them on and taking them off, but once they’re on, they offer exceptional grip and stability.

Available in sizes 11 Kids – 6.5 Big Kids.

Patter – Classic ReimaTec Waterproof Sneakers

The Patter shoes are, hands down, our favorite. The double velcro closure makes them incredibly easy to put on and take off, and the soles offer the perfect balance of flexibility and support. They’re fantastic for navigating mud and small puddles. We loved them so much, we bought a second pair so both our older kids could enjoy them!

Available in sizes 7 Toddler – 10.5 Toddler, 11 Kids – 4.5 Big Kids.

Spring Accessories

Spring showers don’t have to mean staying indoors! Rain hats and mittens are key to keeping kids dry and comfortable during outdoor play. While waterproof shoes and pants are essential, don’t forget a hat to protect little heads from the cold rain and mittens to keep hands warm for puddle-splashing and mud-pie making adventures.

Puro – Waterproof Lined Rain Mittens

The Puro rain mittens are, hands down, our go-to for wet weather play! You’ll spot them in countless pictures in different colors because they’re used constantly. Our kids love them for keeping their hands warm and dry while playing in mud and chilly water. They’re a must-have for extending outdoor fun during those cold, damp days.

Available in sizes 6 – 24 months, 2Y-8Y.

Rubbery Rain Hat

The rubbery rain hat is a bit of a mixed bag in our household. Two of our kids are firmly anti-hat, preferring a soaked head or a hood. However, our other two absolutely adore them! They put their rain hats to the ultimate test during a sprinkle-sunny-rainbow day, staying happily outside for hours after their siblings retreated indoors. For those who love hats, these are a definite win!

Available in sizes 9-12 months, 1Y-12Y.
