Town Hall Outdoor Gear Review

Town Hall has quickly become a trustworthy brand for kids (and some adult) winter gear, perfect for skiing, winter play, and winter layering. After testing it ourselves for the past two years we can safely say we highly recommend the brand and look forward to it gaining even more momentum in the outdoor space over the coming years.

Started in Steamboat Springs by parents who just wanted high quality, sustainable gear for their children, Town Hall focuses on community and using their years of expertise in the industry to deliver.

Down Town Puffy

I am not exaggerating when I say that my teen boys wear their Down Town Puffy jackets every single day, most of the day.

They are soft and comfortable, not super bulky, are a great layering piece or worn on their own, and have zippered pockets. The shell, liner and insulation are made with 100% recycled materials, which we appreciate too.

I love that they not only come in kid sizes XS (5/6) – XL (13/14), but also some limited adult colors which has been great for my 15 year old. The sizing is true to size with room for some layering. The length is slightly longer for good coverage too.

My boys especially are SUPER hard on their gear. After daily for a year use we did eventually have to add one Noso patch to fix a hole, but have been so pleased with the general durability and washability. The zippers have had no issues, which I feel like has come up with other gear for these kids that play so hard.

My daughter has been loving the (slightly thinner, slightly more affordable) Skip Town Insulated Jacket too. Again, she wears it pretty consistently on an all-day basis. It doesn’t have a hood like the Down Town, so works even better for a mid layer on cold days.

It’s soft and comfortable, has zippered pockets, is smooth for easy layering AND reversible. We also really appreciate the chest zippered pocket for keeping track of cash or valuables.

This is the jacket when you don’t need a full-on puffy, but appreciate more than a sweatshirt. And, again, it’s great for layering.

Mountain Town Winter Bibs and Jacket

Of all the pieces we have tried, I have been most impressed with the thoughtful details for skiing kids put into the Mountain Town Winter Bibs and Jacket.

Our youngest normally wears a size 7, but fits into the XS (5/6) perfectly. It won’t fit her next season, but is great for this year. I would say the fit is true to size.

Around Town Cold Weather Jacket

This one is similar to the Mountain Town jacket (above) in terms of weight and insulation, but the features vary. The Around Town features a fleece lining on the inside and front flap pockets. The Mountain Town is geared for skiing with a powder skirt, pit zips, and ski pass pocket.

TMM Team Member Jami’s daughter wore this jacket (in a size Small 7/8 when she was 6.5-8.5yo) for 2 solid winters and it still fits this year, just getting a little short in the torso – we feel it runs true to size like the other items. It kept her daughter warm and dry in their variable Wisconsin winters.

The Town Hall Around Town jacket is great for all winter play!

We love the fleece lining for a cozy feel. The light insulation makes this good for mild winter days with just base layers or add a mid-layer fleece for extra chilly days. The adjustable cuffs help keep snow out of mittens. The front flap pockets are magnetic, so easy to work with mittens and there are also zippered pockets on the side.

After 2 plus years of wear there is some velcro on the front zipper closure coming off (easy fix with a stitch or glue) and the lighter orange has become a little stained from playing at school recess, otherwise this jacket has held up very well and her youngest will be wearing it soon.

This jacket has been great for winter play to school to around town as the name suggests. If you looking for a ski or true winter/snow jacket – check out the Mountain Town. If you are looking for a versatile jacket at a lower price, the Around Town is a great choice!

Town Hall for Outdoor Families

We love supporting small businesses and definitely think Town Hall is worth spending your hard-earned money on if you’re looking for high quality, kid-focused, thoughtful and sustainable gear.
