Big Agnes knows their gear and obviously spends a lot of time on details, even with something as “simple” as a sleeping bag. Standard to most Big Agnes bags, it comes with a built in sleeve for your sleeping pad to prevent the annoying “roll-off” that often happens, especially with kids. Additionally, there are extra bits of padding around zippers and the head opening to assure the highest level of warmth possible. Big Agnes bags also come with an attached pocket to add a pillow or clothing to for sleeping (again, helping the “roll-off” factor to diminish a bit.)
The Porcupine is definitely a heavier bag that will be great for the fall here in the mountains. It is their first youth bag with a goose fill (which means warm kids!) and is rated at +15 degrees F. Again, that rating is dependent on a lot of factors, but at least is a guideline to use. Since it fits kids up to 5′ tall, it is definitely on the larger size for J. He can use it now, but it will be much effective as he gets taller.
It is important to note that this is definitely one of the bags that will get more use in the fall (and we will update our review then too!) It’s simply too warm right now to get a really good reading of how it will perform in freezing temperatures. But, by our limited experience (of J getting really hot in it), we don’t expect to be disappointed.
What we love:
– Goose down. It’s warm.
– The shape of the bag allows for plenty of “move room” around the arms so it is less confining than a typical mummy bag.
– The sleeping pad sleeve and pillow pocket are GREAT.
– The added flaps over the zippers mean greater warmth.
What we aren’t so crazy about:
– Good down. It’s not so great when wet.
– I love the feature of bags that “grow” with the kid (and this one does not have that.)
