The Best Bikes for Kids
Some of my favorite holiday memories involve waking up to a new bike by my family’s Christmas tree. Waking up on Christmas morning to find a shiny new bike under the tree is a moment of pure joy. I remember the feeling of freedom as I hopped on, ready to explore the neighborhood and embrace new adventures.
A Christmas morning bicycle is more than just a gift; it’s an invitation to create unforgettable memories, from joyful rides with friends to solo explorations on sunny days. This Christmas, that new bike is the key to endless possibilities, sparking a love for riding that will last a lifetime. If your child is ready for a new bike as a gift this holiday season, check out these recommendations for our absolute favorite bikes for little ones (and we’ve tested A LOT of them over the years/decades!)
Woom’s Newest Bike: The Explore
We love Woom bikes here at TMM, and are so excited for the newest addition, the Explore! The Explore bike is the perfect companion for adventurous young riders ready to take their cycling skills to new heights.
The Explore features durable tires and a reliable gear system, making it ideal for tackling various terrains, from smooth pavements to rugged trails. Its innovative design prioritizes safety with a low center of gravity and super-responsive, high-quality disc brakes, giving parents peace of mind as kids explore their surroundings.
The Woom Explore is available in sizes 4 (20″), 5 (24″), and 6 (26″), making it the perfect gift for school-aged kids.
Best Bikes for Toddlers and Preschoolers
Mastering balance is the first step in learning to ride a bike. For our team, many of our toddlers begin their cycling adventures on high-quality, lightweight balance bikes, and soon they’re pedaling confidently. Here are some of our top recommendations for the best balance bikes for little learners, along with pedal bikes to transition to when they’re ready to ride!
Woom 1 Balance Bike
Here at KRB, we love the Woom 1 balance bike, and it’s hands down one of the best (if not THE best) balance bike to introduce toddlers and young preschoolers to cycling on two wheels. It’s super lightweight and smooth, which makes it easy for little ones to handle. It also comes with handbrakes to encourage younger kids to practice using them to control their speed.
For older preschoolers who are just starting out on their two-wheeled adventures and have sized out of the Woom 1, Woom makes the Woom 1 Plus balance bike with similar features. In addition, the Woom 2 is also a versatile option for an older preschooler because you can remove the pedals and use it as a balance bike, then add them back on when your kid is ready.
Another plug for the Woom – if you compare the 3 photos above, the Woom has the rear brake above the rear stay, the other two are below. This is a pro for Woom because kids have a tendency to clip their heels on the rear brake when it is below that stay. Woom has eliminated that issue by placing the brake above!
Pello Ripple Balance Bike
For the littlest ones, the Pello Ripple balance bike is a solid choice. It has a low step-over height and highly-adjustable handlebars and seat to get the perfect fit for your little one.
Prevelo Alpha Zero
Another lightweight balance bike from another brand we trust! At just 7.4lbs, the Alpha Zero is another great option with a quality build.
Best Bikes For School-Aged Kids
With so many choices for bikes for older kids, it can be overwhelming to decide what to buy! If your little rider has outgrown their previous options, there are many lightweight, kid-friendly bikes available that will be easy for them to handle and help foster a love for riding, and *hint* you wont find any of these at a big box store or bike shop.
Woom Original 3 or 4
Woom makes lightweight, easy-to-ride kids’ bikes of all sizes, and their bikes for school-aged kids are a great choice. They come in fun, bright colors, including some new limited editions like Atomic Neon. the new Woom 3 AUTOMAGIC has an internal gear shifter that automatically shifts up or down depending on how fast the rider is going, helping small kids tackle hills without needing to know how to shift. For slightly older kids, the Woom 4 microSHIFT features 7 gears operated by a kid-specific twist shifter to introduce school-aged kids to the technique of shifting gears.

Bike Gifts to Keep Bikers Safe and Visible
When diving into the world of biking accessories, it’s essential to prioritize safety. Consider items like high-quality helmets that fit properly and provide excellent protection, as well as reflective gear to enhance visibility during rides in low light. Bike lights and bells are also great stocking stuffers, as well as helping to alert others and increase safety on the road.
Best Kids Helmets for Biking
A well-fitted helmet is a must for any child who rides a bike. Look for helmets with colorful designs and adjustable straps to make safety fun and comfortable.
Check out our tips for how to get your child to wear a helmet if you are struggling with this! Looking for a full face helmet? Check out some of our recommendations for a child full face helmet.
Woom Helmet
The Woom helmet is a kid-specific, highly-adjustable design in fun colors that match their Original bikes.
Bern Nino Bike Helmet
The Bern Nino helmet features a removable visor to keep sun and rain off kid faces, plus it’s an all-season helmet that can work for winter riding along with fair weather days. The helmet comes in both a youth and toddler size, and you can opt for MIPS (more expensive, but better protection against rotational forces during crashes) or not (a bit cheaper, still offers protection just not to the same degree as a MIPs helmet).
Giro Tremor MIPs Helmet
This has been hands-down my favorite helmet for school-aged kids. It fits well and is easy to get the “right” fit. The ventilation is great and we love the colors.
Smith Wilder Jr. MIPS Helmet
A newer fan favorite on the team is the Smith Wilder helmet. This one fits narrower head kids better than the Giro above and still has good protection with MIPS.
Bike Lights for Kids: Headlights and Tail Lights
Safety is paramount for cycling with kids, and bike lights are essential for riding, especially in the winter when dark comes earlier. While headlights are typically white and tail lights red, you can opt for fun, multi-colored LED lights that kids will love for spoke lights.

Woom’s bike lights are lightweight and easy to attach, so kids can use them independently. The durable construction can withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures, and the long-lasting battery life means fewer interruptions on rides. Po Campo Rechargeable Clip-On Bike Lights
Po Campo makes great products for kid biking, including these lights for the front and back of your little one’s ride. They are easy to clip on and off for quick recharging.
Kids Spoke Lights for Bikes
Another fun option to keep kids visible is lighting up their wheels! While front and back headlights keep them visible to car traffic in front and behind them, spoke lights keep riders visible to traffic coming on either side, an important safety feature (plus they look so dang cool!)
Nite Ize See’Em Mini Spoke Lights
These mini spoke lights securely clip into the spokes of the bike and turn on by twisting the light. When the wheels turn, the lights create bright circular patterns to help keep your little cyclist visible.
Nite Ize SpokeLit Disc-O Wheel Light
These are similar to the mini spoke lights, but they are rechargeable and color changing!
Activ Life LED Lights
This string of LED lights is designed to be looped through the spokes of the bike wheel. We received these as stocking stuffers a few years ago and found them difficult to install but once installed they are bright and easy to turn on and off.
Reflective Stickers
I don’t know about your kids, but mine LOVE stickers. These reflective bike stickers make fun stocking stuffers, plus they also can keep kids visible at night so they also great for safely riding in the winter months. I know mine love to personalize their things, so why not do it with style AND safety in mind? (Just don’t tell the kids the second part!)
Woom GLAM Reflective Stickers
Woom makes durable reflective stickers with funky designs for kid bikes.
RydeSafe Reflective Decals
Along with lights, reflective stickers can also keep little cyclists visible to traffic. Kids love stickers, so why not gift them ones that will also keep them safe? These reflective decals come in a pack with lots of fun shapes to choose from.
Thousand Reflective Stickers
The popular helmet brand Thousand also makes large reflective decals in fun designs, perfect for sticking on your child’s helmet or bike frame for increased visibility.
Fenders
When it comes to equipping kids’ bikes, fenders might not always be the first accessory that comes to mind, but they play a crucial role in enhancing both safety and enjoyment. Fenders act as shields, preventing mud, water, and debris from splashing up onto the rider. This is especially valuable during rainy days or when riding through puddles (which kids love to do!)
Skida Fender
These fenders are flexible enough to fit on most bikes, including children’s bikes. The patterns are super cute, especially the strawberry fields pattern, which would go perfectly with a red or green Woom!
Ground Keeper Mini Fender
Ground Keeper makes amazing quality fenders, including custom ones. The new Mini Fender is a great option for kid bikes and comes in funky patterns like this rainbow oil slick one.
Mucky Nutz Face Fender
A slightly more economical version or for those kids and teens who want fenders that are less colorful or patterned, the Mucky Nutz fenders are easy to attach and get the job done.
Bike Bells
Help your tiny cyclist make their presence known with a fun and attention-grabbing bell or horn. Look for ones with cool characters and fun designs to make your gift even more beloved. Bike bells make great stocking stuffers!
Woom Vienna Bell
Woom’s bike bell dings a pleasant, melodic sound and is perfectly sized and easy to use for younger kids. It would be a perfect addition to one of the Woom bikes above.
Electra Domed Ringer Bike Bell
The Electra bike bell comes in so many cute designs (cats with sunglasses, hello!) and is easy to attach with a loud ringing sound to alert pedestrians or fellow cyclists your kiddo is passing by.

Bike baskets are an easy and inexpensive accessory to add onto a kid’s bike, but the possibility for what to carry in it are endless! Treasures from home or on the trail often make their way into my daughter’s basket.
Po Campo Whoosh Basket
Po Campo makes quality (and adorable!) kid bike accessories and their basket is no exception. Durable and easy to attach, it has a zipper compartment for safe keeping of tiny valuables.
Anzome Bike Basket
Another soft basket is the Anzome bike basket, which is a more budget option at less than half the price of the Po Campo. It also comes in fun designs and attaches quickly with two velcro straps.
Snack! Bike Bags
These bags come in your favorite snacks to hold some of your favorite snacks! They have a variety of foods for different attachments.
Water Bottle Holder for Kids Bike
Keep them hydrated during their rides by gifting a colorful water bottle and a compatible holder that attaches to the bike frame. Smaller kids bikes can be difficult to get a water bottle cage on, so we have included a variety of options!
Planet Bike Aluminum Water Bottle Cage
The Planet Bike water bottle cage is inexpensive, comes in a variety of colors, and works with all kinds of different bottles. Most bikes will have a spot to install a water bottle cage on the frame, but double check your kid’s bike and sizing before purchasing. Regular size cages may not fit until your kid is on a 24″ bike.
Portland Design Works Wee Sip Water Bottle Bag
The Po Campo water bottle bag is a great versatile option, because it does not attach with screws so can be placed anywhere on the bike frame or handlebars (or even a backpack). PDW also has some fun animal water bottle cages you should be sure to check out!

Fidlock transferred their helmet buckle technology over to a water bottle mount. The 450 bottle is perfect for smaller kids bikes where a regular bottle wont fit and the magnetic-mechanical attachment system fits in the small spaces.
